Avengers: Endgame ending explained: the snap, the shield and the dance

Spoilers ahead: this article discusses the ending.

Avengers: Endgame ending explained begins with Tony Stark taking the Infinity Stones from Thanos and snapping his fingers. The 2019 film closes three character arcs at once: Tony dies, Steve Rogers gets his life with Peggy Carter, and Thor leaves Earth with the Guardians of the Galaxy.

Endgame grossed about $2.8 billion in its first run, and after its 2026 Encore re-release its total passed Avatar to become the highest-grossing film of all time. Much of its pull comes from these final scenes.

Here is what happens, and what writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have said about why.

Avengers: Endgame ending explained: the final battle and Tony's snap

A 2014 version of Thanos travels forward in time and brings his army to the ruins of the Avengers compound. Carol Danvers destroys his warship, but Thanos gets hold of the gauntlet. Tony Stark takes the Stones from him and uses them to turn Thanos and his army to dust.

The power is too much for a human body. Tony dies beside Pepper, Peter Parker and Rhodey, and his funeral brings together almost every hero from the series.

Why Tony Stark dies

Markus and McFeely have defended the death as earned. They described it as "a heroic, finished life" after Tony had found "the perfect retirement life" with Pepper and their daughter. The man who started the series building weapons ends it giving his life to save the universe, which closes the arc that began in Iron Man.

Natasha Romanoff's earlier sacrifice on Vormir, giving her life so Clint can take the Soul Stone, makes Tony's death the second the victory costs.

Steve Rogers, Peggy and the shield

Steve volunteers to return the Stones and Mjolnir to the moments they were taken from. He does not come back on time. Instead, an elderly Steve sits on a bench nearby, having lived a full life in the past with Peggy Carter. He hands his shield to Sam Wilson.

McFeely said Steve "was going to get his dance", the date he promised Peggy at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger. The writers have said they first planned to kill Steve before settling on this ending and the handoff to Sam.

Thor leaves with the Guardians

Thor names Valkyrie king of New Asgard and joins the Guardians of the Galaxy. After a film spent struggling with failure, he steps away from the throne, choosing to be who he is rather than who he was expected to be.

How the time travel works in Endgame

Endgame's rules break from time travel stories like Back to the Future, which the film mocks directly. Changing the past does not rewrite the present; it creates branches. That is why returning the Stones matters, and it is also why fans argue over how old Steve ended up in the main timeline.

The writers have given different answers to that question over the years, so the honest answer is that the film leaves it loose.

  • Tony: dies a hero after building the life he wanted.
  • Steve: lives the life he gave up, then passes on his role.
  • Thor: gives up his crown and leaves Earth.
  • Natasha: sacrifices herself on Vormir so the others can win.
