Saltburn ending explained: Oliver's plan, Elspeth and the final dance

Spoilers ahead: this article discusses the ending.

Saltburn ending explained comes down to a confession. In the final minutes of Emerald Fennell's 2023 film, Oliver Quick (Barry Keoghan) reveals that he planned his way into the Catton family from the start and caused every death that left him the estate.

The last scene, a naked dance through the empty house to Murder on the Dancefloor, turns that confession into a victory lap. Here is what happens and what it means.

What happens at the end of Saltburn

Years after the summer at Saltburn, Oliver reads in a newspaper that Sir James Catton (Richard E. Grant) has died. He arranges what looks like a chance meeting with Lady Elspeth (Rosamund Pike) in a cafe, and she brings him back to the house. She changes her will to leave him everything, including Saltburn.

When Elspeth falls terminally ill, Oliver sits by her bed and tells her the truth, then removes her breathing tube. The film's narration, which seemed to be Oliver speaking to us, turns out to have been aimed at her.

Oliver's confession

Oliver admits that he poisoned Felix (Jacob Elordi) in the hedge maze on the night of his birthday party. He seduced Farleigh and used his email to try to sell James's ceramics, so that James would banish him. He left razor blades by Venetia's bath, and she was found dead.

The confession makes clear that his place in the family was engineered from the start, and that the outsider the Cattons took pity on was a role he was playing.

  • Felix: poisoned in the maze.
  • Farleigh: framed and banished.
  • Venetia: pushed towards suicide.
  • Elspeth: life support removed after he gained the will.

The final dance

Oliver dances naked through every room of Saltburn to Sophie Ellis-Bextor's Murder on the Dancefloor. The engraved stones that marked the family's history have been removed from the lake. Fennell has said she first planned a simple walk through the house, but during filming decided the scene needed joy, desecration, ownership and solitude. The choreographer Polly Bennett called it a dance of extreme ownership.

Saltburn ending explained: what it means

Fennell has called the film a story about loving someone who will never love you back. Oliver wanted Felix, then wanted to be Felix, then settled for owning everything Felix had. She has also described it as a vampire movie about the fetishisation of beauty, and its satire of the British class system as Barry Lyndon meets indie sleaze.

Critics have argued about whether the twist undercuts the class satire. If the outsider is a murderer, is the film mocking the rich or warning against those who want in? Fennell has said she wanted to test whether audiences could fall for characters who are abhorrent, and the ending leaves viewers with that question about themselves.

Release and reception

Saltburn premiered at the Telluride Film Festival in August 2023, opened in UK and US cinemas that November and became a word-of-mouth hit after arriving on Amazon Prime Video in December. The cast also includes Alison Oliver as Venetia, Archie Madekwe as Farleigh and Carey Mulligan as the family friend known as Poor Dear Pamela. Keoghan's committed performance holds the film together, because the ending only works if the audience has spent two hours half-trusting Oliver.
